Last week we had the pleasure of participating in a new meeting of the HyInHeat project organized by the project partner Constellium in Grenoble.
HyInHeat is a European funded project, with 30 partners from 12 European countries, that aims to integrate hydrogen as a fuel for high-temperature heating processes in energy-intensive industries, particularly in the aluminium and steel sectors. The project seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from these sectors by implementing efficient hydrogen combustion systems that cover almost their entire process chains.
Nowadays, most of the reheating furnaces for Rolling Mill in the steel industry operate with natural gas as fuel and air as oxidizing agent. The rolling mill requires such reheating temperatures that up to the 80% of fuel consumption of the whole plant in most mini-mills takes place in this process. Therefore, the reheating furnace is a capital point from where to begin the decarbonization and emission reduction of a steelmaking plant.
SARRALLE within the HyInHeat project will work together with an ArcelorMittal plant, to adapt their reheating furnace, in order to allow the operation with 100% hydrogen as fuel, and oxygen as oxidizing agent, since the transition from the usual operation of the equipment with air to oxy-combustion, results in fuel savings of between 10-50% depending on the current operation of the equipment. Moreover, a major advantage of the transition of the furnace to oxy-combustion over air-combustion will the potential for reduction of total NOx emissions.
Throughout the HyInHeat project we will gain knowledge on the industrialization of our hydrogen combustion technologies for reheating furnaces for the steel industry, and we will be able to adapt our reheating furnace designs to operate with 100% hydrogen. Additionally, HyInHeat will provide us the opportunity to join forces with the other academic and industrial partners throughout the project, in order to work together on the successful integration of hydrogen as fuel in the steel sector.

La semana pasada tuvimos el placer de participar en una nueva reunión del proyecto HyInHeat organizada por el socio del proyecto, Constellium, en Grenoble.
HyInHeat es un proyecto financiado con fondos europeos, en el que participan 30 socios de 12 países europeos, cuyo objetivo es integrar el hidrógeno como combustible en los procesos de calentamiento a alta temperatura de las industrias de alto consumo energético, especialmente en los sectores del aluminio y el acero. El proyecto pretende reducir las emisiones de dióxido de carbono de estos sectores mediante la implantación de sistemas eficientes de combustión de hidrógeno que abarquen casi toda su cadena de procesos.
En la actualidad, la mayoría de los hornos de recalentamiento para laminación de la industria siderúrgica funcionan con gas natural como combustible y aire como agente oxidante. El tren de laminación requiere tales temperaturas de recalentamiento que hasta el 80% del consumo de combustible de toda la planta en la mayoría de las mini-fábricas tiene lugar en este proceso. Por tanto, el horno de recalentamiento es un punto capital desde el que comenzar la descarbonización y reducción de emisiones de una acería.
SARRALLE dentro del proyecto HyInHeat trabajará conjuntamente con una planta de ArcelorMittal, para adaptar su horno de recalentamiento, con el fin de permitir el funcionamiento con 100% de hidrógeno como combustible, y oxígeno como agente oxidante, ya que la transición del funcionamiento habitual del equipo con aire a la oxicombustión, supone un ahorro de combustible de entre el 10-50% dependiendo del funcionamiento actual del equipo. Además, una gran ventaja de la transición del horno a la oxicombustión frente a la combustión con aire será el potencial de reducción de las emisiones totales de NOx.
A lo largo del proyecto HyInHeat adquiriremos conocimientos sobre la industrialización de nuestras tecnologías de combustión de hidrógeno para hornos de recalentamiento de la industria siderúrgica, y podremos adaptar nuestros diseños de hornos de recalentamiento para que funcionen con un 100% de hidrógeno. Además, HyInHeat nos brindará la oportunidad de unir fuerzas con el resto de socios académicos e industriales a lo largo del proyecto, para trabajar juntos en la integración con éxito del hidrógeno como combustible en el sector siderúrgico.
